VIDEO: How to Add a Thumbnail to a YouTube Video

YouTube automatically generates a default thumbnail for your uploaded video.  However, you may want to change this.  Custom thumbnails with titles can increase your chances of being seen.

If you want to add a thumbnail to a YouTube video, here’s how to do it.

Step 1 – From the video’s playback page, select Info & Settings

Step 2 – Select Custom Thumbnail

Step 3 – Locate the image file and click Open, then Save Changes

If you want to add a thumbnail to a YouTube video, YouTube suggests that your custom thumbnails:

  • Have a resolution of 1280×720 (with minimum width of 640 pixels).
  • Be uploaded in image formats such as .JPG, .GIF, .BMP, or .PNG.
  • Remain under the 2MB limit.
  • Try to use a 16:9 aspect ratio as it’s the most used in YouTube players and previews.
